Vachana Contemplation

Vachanas are the gems emanating from the mystical experiences of Sharanas, the great mystics. Seemingly simple, they convey profound meaning to the aspirants as the progress in their spiritual journey. Contemplating on the Vachanas with open mind will enable to better understand himself, his life, and his goals. Here is a Vachana of Guru Basavanna:

Humans devoid of divine contemplation and divine awareness –
In a heap of dung, aren’t worms born in thousands, O Lord?
Won’t wild beasts co-exist, O Lord?
Won’t domestic animals co-habit, O God?
Notice- towns and nations, without Kudalasanga’s Sharanas,
are forest dwellings, mere jungle of humanity!

People have a strong bond with this world and tend to live a life dominated by the world that surrounds them. Humans often feel that they are the most advanced species on this earth. Guru Basavanna challenges us to evaluate this notion carefully.

While humans are endowed with superior intellect, are they really leading a life that befits this intelligence?
The life humans lead in this world, is it really superior to other creatures?
